Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme in the state

1. National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP)

Objective

The Programme aims to control Foot and Mouth Disease by 2025 with biannual vaccination and its eventual eradication by 2030 and Brucellosis by vaccination. All eligible cattle and buffaloes are vaccinated against Foot and Mouth Disease biannually and all eligible heifers (4 to 8 months old) are vaccinated against brucellosis for effective management of the disease in both animals and in humans.

Activities carried out:
  • Vaccinating the entire susceptible population of bovines, at six-monthly intervals (mass vaccination against FMD)
  • Once in lifetime vaccination of all female calves (heifer) between 4 to 8 months against Brucellosis
  • Identification of target animals by ear-tagging, registration and uploading the data in the animal health module of Bharat Pashudhan Portal.
  • Serosurveillance /Seromonitoring of animal population

Foot and Mouth disease

  • Vaccination of the entire susceptible cattle at six-monthly intervals.
  • So far, 5 rounds of vaccination have been completed
  • Reduces mortality and productivity losses in livestock.
  • Prevents economic losses for farmers by controlling disease outbreaks.

Brucellosis

  • Once in lifetime vaccination of female calves between 4 to 8 months.
  • Helps in reducing infertility and abortion in infected animals.
  • Prevents zoonotic transmission (spread from animals to humans).

Assistance to States for Control of Animal Diseases (ASCAD):

Vaccines against economically important livestock diseases such as Anthrax, Black Quarter, Haemorrhagic Septicaemia and Sheep Pox are produced in the IVPM, Ranipet. Vaccination is being carried out before the expected onset of monsoon. From the year 2022 vaccination against Lumpy skin disease is also carried out for eligible cattle in the State. All the vaccinations are carried out at free of cost.

B. Central Sector Schemes (100% Central)

i) Peste-des-petits Ruminants – Eradication Programme (PPR-EP)

  • Highly contagious disease of sheep and goat causing heavy loss to farmers.
  • About 103 Lakh eligible small ruminant population were vaccinated during 2023-2024.

ii) Classical Swine Fever(CSF) Control Programme

  • Highly contagious disease of sheep and goat causing heavy loss to farmers.
  • About 103 Lakh eligible small ruminant population were vaccinated during 2023-2024.
